Outline of Final Research Achievements	In this research project, we aimed at revealing the universality and diversity of face recognition by conducting face recognition experiments in diverse regions such as Asia and Africa through field experiments. The results have suggested that there was regional diversity in the individuals' style of face recognition, not just in recognition of facial expression. More specifically, the schematic representation of a face as eyes and mouth (∵) cannot be considered as human universal. Furthermore, the field experiments conducted on the basis of interdisciplinary collaboration between anthropologists, field workers, and experimental psychologists, emphasized the contextual-loadness in the experiments of face studies, which had been overlooked in laboratory experiments.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements	「顔とは何か」これは学術的にも社会的にも大きな問いかけである。誰もが、他者の顔を同じやり方で認識しているのだろうか。この問いに対して、フィールド実験などの量的、質的研究を通して、我々は明確に「NO」という答えを示した。他者の顔の認識の仕方、さらに言えば「顔とは何か」という概念でさえ、文化的、地域的背景の産物である。情報化社会の中で、生身の人間同士のコミュニケーションのウェイトが相対的に下がっている。このような時代背景の中で「顔」の役割を再考する必要がある。顔認知の多様性を所与のものとして、「顔とは何か」という問いに社会的、学術的に応えていく必要がある。
