Outline of Final Research Achievements

The aim of our study was to explore how language development is promoted by hierarchy and intention sharing. As for the hierarchy, we found that infants are already sensitive to fundamental sound units and their combinations. As for intention sharing, the use of finger-pointing and eye gaze can promote relevant intention sharing through the examination of finger movement and eye-gaze coordination. As for the integration of hierarchy and intention sharing, we found that the interpretation of the hierarchical structure of phrases promotes intonation patterns that reflect the speaker’s intention. We also explored the relationship between the development of the theory of mind and complement structures and found that the ability to guess others’ intentions is related to the use of complement structures. We successfully drew the integration of hierarchy and intention sharing from developmental perspectives.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

意図共有と階層性が絡み合って直示(ostension)が出現し、人間の共創的言語コミュニケーションの進化に繋がったという仮説を立て、言語の個体発達過程からこの仮説を検討した。直示コミュニケーションとは、人が他者に意図明示的に行うコミュニケーション様式であり、「○○と相手は考えていると自分はわかっていることを相手は知っている」のような、複雑な埋め込み文で記述しうるような階層性を伴う。研究の結果、協力的な社会構築に寄与しうる、人間の共創的なコミュニケーションが創出されるメカニズムを、発達の観点から明らかにすることができた。これは定型発達・非定型発達の子どもたちの発達を促す方策へも示唆を与えた。
