Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Morphological evolution can be viewed as the conservation and fluctuation in the connection of structural elements. Basic morphological plan of the cranium, including the sensory capsules, and the connectivity relationships found in the musculoskeletal system in vertebrates were comprehensively studied as developmental changes in patterns and mechanisms, as well as palaeontological transitions. In particular, it was suggested that the emergence of new elements and recombination of connections are involved in the creation of new patterns, which are called evolutionary novelty. As a result, 17 papers (including two in Nature) were published on the evolution of the tongue and external eye muscles and the inner ear. In addition, we collaborated with the Koyabu, Higashiyama and Irie groups and published six papers.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
