Research Abstract |
"Calpains", which are encoded by 15 genes in humans, constitute a family of intracellular Ca^<2+>-dependent "modulator" proteases. They function to maintain homeostasis of various living organisms, and, therefore, defects in calpain functions result in lethality or diseases like muscular dystrophy and stress-induced stomach ulcer. In this study, we focused on tissue-specific calpains, which is involved in tissue-specific functions where they are expressed. As a result, we could elucidate at least a part of molecular mechanisms how defects of calpains cause various disorders.
