Outline of Annual Research Achievements

高圧合成法を駆使することで、キタエフ型量子スピン液体の新しい候補物質となるRuBr3およびRuI3を発見した。RuBr3はTN=35Kで反強磁性秩序を示すモット絶縁体である一方で、RuI3はパウリ常磁性的な振る舞いを示す半金属であることを解明した。これらの物質の固溶体Ru(Cl1-xBrx)3 (x = 0-1)およびRu(Br1-yIy)3 (y = 0 - 1) の電子相図を明らかにした。電気抵抗率から見積もった電荷ギャップは、配位子をCl=>Br=>Iと変えるに従い系統的に小さくなり、y = 0.80 でバンド幅制御型の金属絶縁体転移を示す。ほぼ同組成であるy = 0.80 で空間群がR-3 からP-31c へ変化する構造相転移が生じることが分かった。金属絶縁体転移の近傍であるy = 0.60 - 0.70 では、短距離的な磁気相関が存在するスピン液体的な状態が実現している可能性がある。電子比熱係数は、金属であるRuI3 から金属絶縁体転移の臨界領域であるy = 0.80 近傍に向かって増加しているように見える。これは金属領域から臨界領域に向かって電子の有効質量が増加することを意味しており、Brinkmann-Rice 機構により金属絶縁体転移が生じていると結論できる。

上記に加えて、様々な量子液晶物質の開発に取り組んだ。具体的な実績として、Aサイト秩序型ペロブスカイト型酸化物NdCu3Fe4O12における電荷移動に伴う巨大な潜熱の発見、Ptの三角形を有する CdI2型Pt1+xBi2における転移温度Tc=2.4 Kの超伝導の発見、1次元構造を有するTa2Pd3Te5およびNb2Pd3Te5における超伝導の発見、Bi2CuO4における非相反線二色性の観測と機構解明、Caを含まない100K級銅酸化物超伝導体の発見が挙げられる。

Reason

本研究課題では、化学的要因・結晶構造・磁気構造・バンド構造に着目することで、新奇な量子液晶状態が具現する新物質を開発することを目的としている。令和三年度は、新物質開発研究を強力に推進した。室温で量子液晶状態にある物質の機能開拓に関して、重要な成果が挙がった。具体的には、遷移金属カチオンが秩序配列した酸化物NdCu3Fe4O12が、電荷移動に伴う電荷秩序とスピン秩序を起こし、この際の磁気モーメントの変化に伴う磁気エントロピーの変化が大きな潜熱を発生することを明らかにした。電荷転移温度が圧力下で変化することから、この潜熱は圧力熱効果として利用でき、高効率な熱制御を実現できることも実証した。また、数々の新超伝導体の発見にも成功した。これらは、三角格子・一次元構造などのユニークな結晶構造を有する物質、あるいは重元素(Pt, Pd)・Caフリー銅酸化物などの化学的な特徴を有する物質であり、今度のさらなる展開が期待できる。以上のように、当初の計画に沿って、研究活動は順調に進捗している。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

前年度に引き続き、(a) 化学的要因に着目した量子液晶物質の探索、(b) 結晶構造に着目した量子液晶物質の探索、(c) 磁気構造に着目した量子液晶物質の探索、(d) バンド構造に着目した量子液晶物質の探索、(e) 理論指針に基づき物質開発、(f) 外場による量子液晶の制御を実施する。対象とする物質群は、幾何学的フラストレーションを内包する量子スピン系・強相関効果の卓越した遷移金属酸化物・鉄系高温超伝導体・銅酸化物超伝導体・異常高原子価を有する物質・スピン軌道相互作用の卓越した5d遷移金属化合物・軌道縮退を有する不定比性化合物などである。到達目標は、新奇スピンネマティック秩序・電荷不均化状態・特異な対称性の破れを付随する軌道秩序・方向二色性などのマルチフェロイクス現象・非従来型超伝導・高温超伝導・トポロジカル量子輸送現象などの新奇な量子液晶現象が発現する物質を開発することである。

令和四年度は、前年度まで得られた研究成果をさらに発展させる。例えば、研究代表者のグループで開発した新しい蜂の巣格子系物質の超高圧下電気抵抗率を計測することで、その金属化・超伝導化に挑む。また、磁場印加により巨大な歪が生じる反強磁性体の開発を進め、その磁気ドメイン構造の可視化を推進する。さらに、量子液晶テクノロジーへの展開を見越して、室温付近で巨大な熱量効果・磁歪効果を示す物質の開発を進めるとともに、その発現機構の解明を進める。こうした研究は、班内・班間の共同研究を通して推進する。その情報共有の機会として、第二回量子物質開発フォーラムを開催する。
