| Research Abstract |
In this comparative study of modern empires in Eurasia, we examined diverse phenomena such as asymmetric interaction between imperial power and local society, the role of small states and transborder minorities in inter-imperial rivalry, modernization of peripheries and colonies, and the collapse of empires and decolonization in the 20th century. The present regional powers are half empires and half nation-states, and are influenced by imperial legacies and memories. The method of analyzing tricky relations between imperial power and minorities is also useful to the study of relations between today’s great powers and small countries.
