| Research Abstract |
本研究では、近年社会的に問題とされる「顔認識」の社会的側面と、社会的注意(社会的場面で、うまく視線が合わないなどといった問題)の側面を、その発達過程から実験的に検討することを目的としている。本年度は、アルチンボルドの描いた、野菜や果物で構成された絵(アルチンボルド画像)などを使用して、乳児の顔認識能力について検討した。特に乳児の脳活動をNIRS(Near-Infrared Spectroscopy:近赤外分光法)を用いて計測し、(1)7-8ヶ月児でアルチンボルド画像を顔として認識する能力が発達し、正立のアルチンボルド画像の処理は脳の左側頭の活動に関連すること、(2)7-8ヶ月児は顔の向きが変わっても顔領域へのアダプテーション効果がみられるが、5-6ヶ月児では正面顔にしかアダプテーション効果が見られないことなどを報告した。これらの成果は、NeuroImage、Journal of Experimental Child Psychology、Frontiers in Human Neuroscienceなどの学術雑誌に掲載された。海外では視知覚研究で最も多くの研究者が集まり権威のあるVision Science Society(VSS)、国内では日本心理学会など、いくつかの学会で発表された。論文掲載に伴い、2011年9月26日に中央大学後楽園キャンパス内においてプレス会見を行ない、Yahooニュースや毎日新聞・日経新聞など多くの新聞に掲載された。
また、行動実験からは、3次元的に作成された顔画像を用いて、顔と物体を学習する能力を検討した。その結果、乳児が顔を学習する能力は、顔以外の物体を学習する能力とは異なることが示された。また、人は無生物にも顔を知覚する傾向を持つことが報告されている。我々はこのことが特徴処理と全体処理を含む人の顔処理に媒介されたものかどうか、顔に見えるものの画像を使用して検討した。その結果、目の存在が重要であることを見出した。これらの成果は、Journal of Vision、Perceptionなどの学術雑誌に掲載された。

採択後これまでの3年半の間で、国際誌41本、国内紙12本の論文を公刊したことは当初の予想を上回る成果である。いずれも評価の高い良質の学術雑誌であり、海外にもその成果を広げることができた。これらの業績については、随時プレスリリースを行い、社会の関心を広く集めてきた。また、学術的な研究発表だけでなく、一般向けのシンポジウムや特別講演なども行い、一般に向けた研究成果の発信も積極的に行っている。

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
平成23年度の成果をもとに、近赤外線分光法(NIRS)を用いた研究と行動実験を引き続き行い、顔認識の発達メカニズムを明らかにする。
当初の計画がスムーズに進行しているため、さらに発達メカニズムを明らかにする追加実験を行うこととする。乳児における顔に対する順応効果(adaptation effect)について、これが顔画像の大きさに依存せずに起こるかを検討すること等により、顔領域の処理メカニズムを明らかにする。平成24年度には月齢とともに発達する顔認知機能についての縦断研究を継続しより多くのデータを収集するとともに、研究成果を東京大学出版会から書籍として刊行する予定である。
