Research Abstract |
To evaluate difficulty in social cognition in children with ASD objectively, we indicate the brain responses to semantic processing in face recognition. Analysis of hemodynamic activities and electroencephalography (EEG) oscillation indicated activation in the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) of right hemisphere related to semantic processing of face (i.e. self-other, familiarity and expression) in healthy adults and typically-developing children. Averaged EEG (P300) technique also detected the effect of self-other and familiarity discrimination. In children with ASD, however, the semantic processing of face did not reflect in hemodynamic activities of the right IFG and P300 amplitude, except for familiarity- related P300 to learn new faces. The techniques might be useful as a clinical application to evaluate specificity in the semantic processing of face in children with ASD.
