Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, we investigated a crystallization of calcium carbonate and phosphate in a thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystalline phases with molecular orientational order. For the crystallization of calcium carbonate in the thermotropic liquid crystal, cation-complexed crown ether derivative was used and dissolved in a liquid crystal. In the case of thermotropic liquid crystal, precipitated crystals were found to be fibrous or anisotropic in shape, indicating that the crystallization was affected by the orientational order of the host liquid crystal. The obtained crystals were identified to be calcium carbonate vaterite by Raman spectroscopy. The rod-like crystals having layered structures at the side surfaces was produced in a lyotropic lamellar phase with simulated body fluid as a solvent.
