Research Abstract |
Chromatographic separation of polychlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons including polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins, and polychlorodibenzothiophenes were examined by using reversed-phase liquid chromatography and electrokinetic chromatography. The newly synthesized aromatic stationary phases such as 2-(1-pyrenyl)ethylsilylated silica gel and nitrated phenylethyl silica gel for reversed-phase liquid chromatography enabled preparative separation of all the 22 isomers of tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin. Electrokinetic chromatography utilizing a fused silica capillary tubing containing an electrolyte solution afforded separation of isomers of PCBs and dioxins in the presence of water-soluble carriers such as cyclodextrins. The research program showed the usefulness of these new chromatographic methods for the separation of polychlorinated aromatic compounds of environmental concern.
