Research Abstract |
We investigated the prevalence of larval gnathostomes in freshwater fishes in south east area of the Yangtze Valley, the People's Republic of China, from October to November in 1989 and 1990. In 1989, investigations were carried out at 5 districts, Shanghai, Chenchiang, Nanching, Chiuchiang and Nanchang. Shanhai district involved Kunshan, Tienshanhu, Chingpu and Nanhui. Fishes collected in these districts were Channa argus (110), Siniperca chuatsi (24) and Silurus asotus (3). Total numbers of fishes examined were 137. Muscles of the fishes were dissected into small pieces and sliced. These slices were placed between glass plates and examined under a dissecting microscope. Viscera from 4 or 5 fish were mixed, homogenized and digested in respective group in artificial gastric juice at 37^゚C overnight. In muscle examination, 4 encysted larvae were recovered from 4 C. argus. Thirty-four larvae in total were obtained by digesting the viscera. These 38 were divided into 3 groups by their body

length, 0.58-0.86 mm (group A), 1.12-2.61 mm (group B) and 4.86 mm and 4.86 mm (group C). Group A contained 5 small larvae which were the early third-stage. The majority (32 larvae) belonged to group B, 20 of which were infected to two rats. Group C had one larva which was the advanced third-stage. Light and scanning electron microscopy revealed that group A and B had characteristics of G. hispidum and group C that of G. spinigerum. In 1990, we investigated fishes in the two lakes, Hongtze-Hu and Tai-Hu. Fishes examined were Channa argus (22), Cyprinus carpio (8), Carassius auratus (83), Monopterus albus (103), Erythroculter dabryi (27), Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (4), Tilapia nilotica (10), Abbotina rivilaris (90), Acanthorhodeus chankaensis (34), Pseudorasbora parva (157), Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (14), Parabramis pekinensis (1). Total numbers of fishes were 553. Totally 17 larvae were obtained from viscera of 2 fishes, C. argus and M. albus. One larva was obtained from muscle of one C. argus. These larvae belonged to group A and B and were identified as G. hispidum. Fecal examination and autopy were made in 43 cats for investigating the prevalence of adult G. spinigerum in Hongtze district. However no eggs and adult worms occurred in them. Less
