Research Abstract

Person perception, person memory, and face recognition are important modules of social cognition. The purpose of this study is to examine the relations of these modules and to built a new theoretical model of social cognition as a framework for the information processing of self-knowledge.
On face recognition, we tried to identify quantitative factors of visual information to categorize facial expressions. We could clarify the features of facial expressions. We also examined the typicality effect appearing in cognitive processing time. We discussed the information processing on face recognition.
On person memory, we examined self-referent effect by use of the self-generation paradigm. As a result, we found that selfreferent effect was explained from a network theory of memory. We also found that affects influenced self-referent effect. Incidental free and cued recali tests of persons' name which had positive affect, showed stronger self-generation effect than those of persons' name which had negative affects. Organizational aspect of the memory was explained in terms of the degree of the connection of nodes in the network.
On self-knowledge, we investigated the representation of self from the view of the multifaced self. As a result, we found that persons perceived themselves to have more attributes compared to others. We also theoretically discussed the influence of motivational aspects of self, in relation to affect, on selfknowledge.
We discussed the validity of the network model to explain above-mentioned results.
