Research Abstract |
The swinger-spectrometer system has been completed. Results of the field measurements of the magnets and vacuum tests were satisfactory. Developments of focal plane counters, such as multi-wire proportional chambers, single-wire proportional counters, cathode-readout drift chambers, and plastic scintillator hodoscopes, were made along with the developments of soft wares for the control system and the data taking system. Beam tests were made using several kinds of beams both in achromatic and dispersive modes, thus establishing parameters and methods of beam transport. Direct faint beams and scattered beams were lead into the spectrometer to carry out optics diagnostics, tests of focal plane counters both at the first and the second focal planes, and the data taking system. The whole system was found to have expected characteristics. Tests of the neutron time-of-flight system using liquid scintillator detectors were also made, and flight-time spectra, pulse-height spectra, and detector response were measured. Actual detection tests of d* and ^2He were made using INS and CYRIC cyclotrons. Feasibility of ^2He and d* detection using the swinger-spectrometer was established through these experiments. Furthermore, obtained results were used to calculate detection efficiencies of unbound particles, three-body kinematics, and projected energy spectra measured in coincidence with the other particle. Thus various fundamental data were obtained for the study of spin-isospin excitation modes of nuclei by detection of unstable particles.
