| Research Abstract |
1. Mechanical properties of the trachea were evaluated using dogs, pigs, rabbits and cows and were compared with human trachea.
2. The non-porous type artificial tracheae using silicone tube with spiral stent were prepared. Implantation test at the cervical trachea on dogs revealed that this type of artificial trachea caused granulation or dehiscence at the anastomosis sites. We concluded that this type of artificial trachea is not good for tracheal prosthesis.
3. As for the material evaluation, we prepared the sample made from polymers with collagen treatment. As the result of in vivo implantation test on rats revealed that this treatment reduces the tumorgenicity of materials which gives the materials better biocompatibility.
4. The window shape replacement test on the dogs trachea was performed using collagen treated polypropylene mesh. After the operation the inner surface of the defect showed good recover of the normal mucosal epitherium of the trachea.

sis was prepares form the rolled polypropylene mesh which was treated collagen. This mesh tube was reinforced Teflon-yarns stitched in the meshes. Using this tracheal prosthesis, implantation test was performed on dogs cervical trachea. The inner surface of them were covered with new generated mucosal epitherium. In some cases deformations of the prosthesis or the granular tissue formation at the anastomosis sites due to the stimulation of the prosthesis were observed. This result indicated that the structure of the reinforcement must be improved.
6. The reinforcement structure was improved. The Teflon-yarn was attached on the outer surface of the mesh-tube using the heat treatment. The replacement test on dogs trachea showed excellent results. Neither granulation formation nor constriction was observed. The recovery of the tracheal epitherium on artificial trachea was perfect. These results indicates that this type of trachea is sufficient for clinical use.
7. Using composite of bioabsorbable poly lactide mesh and the auto periosteum, circular replacement test on the rabbits trachea was examined. Regeneration of cartilage was observed around the implanted periosteum, which may suggest the applicability of the bioabsorbable materials for artificial trachea. Less
