Research Abstract

We examined the following model systems of multi-media database for analyses of landscape paintings.
(1) Model System Using HyperCard
(2) Model System Using SuperCard
(3) Model System Using File Maker Professional and Data Compression Board
(4) Model System Using Video Disc Player
(5) Model System Using Hi-8 Video Player
(6) Model System Using Still Video System
(7) Model System Using Kodak Photo CD System
Model Systems (1) and (2) are most economical systems to build. However, their execution speeds become slower, as the number of data increase. This is a crucial defect for an image database system. This defect can be removed through separation of image data and text data by using different formats, image data processed through a data compression board, while reference system built by text data on more solid database software (than HyperCard or SuperCard) such as File Maker Professional.
The separation of image data and text data can be attained by using video systems. Model System (4) is more practical than Model System (5), because the former takes random access, while the latter is sequential. However, the quality of still image is not satisfactory in both video systems.
Relatively high video image quality will be realized by a few still video systems. Model System (6) is a system using an economical Still Video System (Canon, Sony, Fuji Film, etc.). Images of much higher quality will be attained by using the Photo CD System (Kodak) in a year or two. Useful interfaces which connect image database system and reference systems is much needed in various fields of study, especially in research and education of visual arts.
