Research Abstract

A compact but modern solar observation system has been completed. The system is composed of Heliostat (phi50 cm), Secondary-Mirror (phi40 cm), Gregory type Telescope (phi30 cm & f16m), Spectrograph (f8m), Halpha-Monitoring System, CCD Cameras, TV Image Processor (512x480 dot & 8 bit resolution), Personal Computer (32 bit CPU), Hard Disk (114 MB), Magneto-Optical Disk (300 MBx2), VTR's (Umatic, Time-lapse & VHS), Displays, Computer-controlled-Video-Switcher and their Peripherals.
The most characteristic feature of this system is that we can, very quickly and continuously, store spectrograms or Halpha monitor images into Hard Disk or Magneto-Optical Disk through the TV Image Processor and the high speed personal computer. In the case of Hard Disk, about 400 frames of image can be stored with a temporal resolution of about 3 s and the Magneto-Optical Disk can save more than 1,200 images for one side with about 6 s time resolution.
The precision or the reproducibility of photometry has been tested under various kind of conditions by taking pictures (photographs) of the same image nearly simultaneously. As a result, it turned out that accurate enough calibrations can be carried out by using a characteristic curve (like photographic photometry) although the sensitivity of a CCD camera is not completely uniform over the light receiving aperture.
The system has been applied for obtaining both spectra and slit jaws monitor pictures of active phenomena, such as, flares, surges, and other types of active prominences. The preliminary analysis shows that this system is good enough for making detailed line profile analyses.
