Research Abstract |
The authors established a measurement system which collects the data of the attitude and movement of a full-scale sailing boat in conjunction with the data of wind and wave, simultaneously. This system was confirmed by the sea test of the sailing cruiser, 10.6m-LOA, under various wind and wave conditions. The both angles of heel and pitch of the boat were measured using a vertical gyro, which was purchased by the budget of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research. The results obtained are as follows : 1) The measured items at the steady sailing states were compared with the results of the velocity prediction program (VPP), which was calculated using the data of both model tests and numerical analysis. The comparison clarified some controversial points of the VPP, and then those points were improved. 2) The movement of the boat was measured in conjunction with wave measurements using a throw-in type wave meter. The measured results were analyzed by means of spectral analysis, and the results were compared with both model test data and numerical calculations. The analyzed results indicated the distinctive feature of motion for the sailing cruiser in waves. 3) The steering and maneuvering characteristics of the boat were also investigated. The performed experiments were normal steering, Z maneuver, luffing-up and tacking tests. The test results were compared with those of numerical simulations. The comparison provided important informations for the prediction of maneuvering characteristics and tacking performance of a sailing cruiser. The method of performance prediction for a sailing cruiser including dynamic characteristics was established by this study. These results can be used as a foundation for the research to develop high performance sailing cruiser and intelligent steering system for sailing.
