Research Abstract

The present study was designed to examine the chronobiological abnormalities of the HPA-axis and the noradrenergic activity in manic-depressive disorder.
1. Circadian rhythms of plasma cortisol, plasma free and total MHPG, and core body temperature were compared in five bipolar patients and 10 normal controls. An earlier acrophase of plasma cortisol and a lower level of plasma free MHPG were observed13EA\ : in the patient group. One of the patients was examined repeatedly in different clinical states. The level of total MHPG was higher in a manic state and the acrophase of cortisol earlier in a depressive state.
2. Five bipolar patients and four controls were studied longitudianally. Blood samples were obtained every 1-4 week for about a year. Plasma cortisol, plasma free and total MHPG were measured and the clinical state was estimated using the HRSD or th13EA\ : e manic rating scale of Petterson. In the patient group the level of plasma cortisol was lower. The coefficient of variation of cortisol level of each patient was higher. A patient with rapid-cycling showed a significant correlation between the mani13EA\ : c rating score and the plasma level of free MHPG.
3. Longitudinal study has been continued because of the application of autoregressive modelling for the analysis of the data.
