| Research Abstract |
This study aimed to clarify regional characteristics of the Chinese society in Japan and to examine factors contributing to the formation of their characteristics. The investigator carried on geographical field works in Yokohama Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka, Okinawa etc. For this two years.
The results of this study are summarized as follows :
1. All of Chinatowns in Japan were formed in cities, such as Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki, whose ports were opened in the last days of the Edo government.
2. The Chinese in Japan have consisted of people mostly from Taiwan, Guangdong, Fujian provinces.
3. Before the Second World War, Chinese have been distinguished in the three fields : Chinese restaurant business, hair-dressing business and tailoring business. After the war, however, Chinese restaurant business became the most inportant economic activity for the Chinese in Japan.
4. The Chinese have made a great use of their cultural backgrounds by making unique commercialized ethnic towns like Chinatowns in Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki. This is the most distinctive form Chinese accommodation to Japanese society.
