Research Abstract |
The cooperative research is 1) to clarify in detail the algal flora and some associated chemical and physical properties of Alaskan arctic and subarctic lakes, 2) to search and identify undescribed minute algae in Alaskan lakes, 3) to investigate the response of algae to the extremely cold condition in arctic lakes, 4) to make clear each distinctive feature of algal flora in Alaskan arctic and subarctic lakes and Japanese temperate lakes by comparing characteristics of boreal organisms which are common to both countries. In 1990, the cooperative research program was carried out at Smith Lake and Ballain Lake near Fairbanks (64.5^0 N) in April and May, and also at Barrow lakes group (71.4^0 N) and Paxson lakes group (63^0 N) in August. Total 115 water samples and 1,003 aquatic moss samples were collected from these lakes and ponds. These samples were brought to Japan after preliminary examining with the light microscope at the laboratory of the Institute of Marine Science, Univ. of Alaska-Fairbanks, and preserved at the herbariums of Department of Biology, Yamagata Univ. and National Inst. of Polar Research, Tokyo.
