Research Abstract |
New types of muon catalyzed fusion (mucf) related experiments have been carried out by using intense negative muon source at the Japan-Canada cooperative superconducting muon channel of TRIUMF in Vancouver, Canada. In the period of 1990-1992, significant output has been obtained in the following two experimental projects. 1)Muon transfer reaction from (dmu) to He By measuring X-rays involved in this transfer reaction, it was found that the reaction mainly proceeds via (dHemu) molecule formed from the ground state of (dmu). Also, based on the discovery of a marked isotope dependence between ^3He and ^4He, an evidence of (Hemu) particle emission dsecay of the (dHeme) molecule was clearly found. 2)Slow mu^- production via muCF The muCF can be considered as a source of 10 KeV slow mu^-. Towards this slow mu^- production, the realization of (ddmu)-muCF in a thin (a few mum) D_2 layer coated on 1mm layer of H_2 with 1,000ppm D_2 was confirmed by detecting 3MeV protons. This muCF phenomena occured with the help of 2eV(dmu) production from H_2(D_2) layer. Related to these experimental achievements, progress was made in the theoretical studies. The possibility of the particle decay of (dHemu) molecule was predicted both by complex coordinata rotation method as well as by the cross section calculation of the invergs process. Also, importance of the finite size of the (dHemu) molecule was found for the level of the pseudo-molecule of [(dtmu)d, 2e] which determined the matching condition in the resonant formation reaction of the (dtmu) molecule.
