Research Abstract |
Results obtained in this project by Singapore and Nagasaki researchers were presented in the Sixth Nagasaki-Singapore Symposium on Medical Sciences (held on December 4th, 1990 in Nagasaki). The accomplished research areas included viral diseases in particular related to hepatitis viruses and HTLV-1, tumors and endocrynological diseases. 1. Hepatitis virus (1) Immunogenicity of a r-DNA HBV vaccine containing pre-S components (2) Intrahepatic hepatitis B surface and core antigen expression in chronic HBsAg carriers in Singapore : Correlation with histologic disease activity (3) Hepatitis C : Epidemiology and the problem of diagnosis (4) The impacts of sociocultural backgrounds on epidemics of HBV and HTLV-1 in island-communities (5) Interferon production is normal in childhood acquired chronic hepatitis B virus infection (6) Evidence of depressed cellular immunity in non-responders to the hepatitis B vaccine (7) Human hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines express DNA binding proteins that recogniz

e the hepatitis B virus core gene enhancer 2. HTLV-1 and tumors (1) Expression of gangliosides on adult T cell leukemia cells (2) Preventiion of maternal transmission of HTLV-1 (3) Molecular analysis of human papilloma viruses in the female and male lower genital tracts (4) Transforming potential of c-fgr proto-oncogene (5) Fibroblast growth factors released by wounded endothelial cells stimulate proliferation of synovial cells 3. Endocrynological diseases (1) Prolactin response to TRH and subtype of depression (2) Islet cell antibodies characteristics of Singapore Chinese (3) Autoimmune thyroid disease : Up-to-date (4) New directions in human assisted reproduction (5) Ultrasound-guided transvaginal fallopian catheterization for assisted conception in particular, analyses of Hepatitis B viruses advanced in Singapore and those of Hepatitis C viruses advanced in Nagasaki. Histological examinations of needle liver biopsies showed essential roles of cytoplasmic HBc antigens for activities of hepatitis. It was also shown by Singapore research that r-DNA HBV vaccine containing pre-S components is effective. In addition, change of interferon production and other cellular immunity in HBV carriers was shown. By analyses in Nagasaki University, a rate of HCV carriers was shown to be 1.1% among 360,000 Japanese blood donors. Rates of HCV carriers increase as the age increases. Detailed follow up studies of hepatitis patients with HCV were also reported. Socio-economical relationships with HBV carriers and HTLV-1 carriers were also analyzed in islands in Nagasaki. Less
