Research Abstract

平成2年9月3日ー7日、箱根で国際研究集会を主催し、磁気圏サブスト-ムの研究:現状土展望を討議した。会議を通じて得られた学術上の成果は米国地球物理学連合出版図書“MAGNETOSPHERIC SUBSTORMS" (総頁数476)に収録されている。7項目にわたり、観測、シミュレ-ション理論の立場から一貫して論じられている。電離圏とプラズマシ-トでのサブスト-ムの理解が主であった従来に対し、将来は磁気圏全体に着目したグロ-バルな理解が必須との認識に到った。長年の懸案事項で、本会議により新しい観点から解決の糸口を得られた例は、(1)磁気X線形成はサブスト-ムエクパンジョンの原因か結果か、(2)クロスティル電流の崩壊はキクパンジョンの原因か結果か、(3)磁形気圏プラズマ対流の強度に対する電離圏応答はキクパンジョンの引き金か結果か等々である。これら諸問題を解決する鍵は、キクパンジョンの開始を何が決めるか、クロスティル電流の崩壊は何をもって決定されるか、X型線成は何で決定されるか、現象論的にそれぞれについてタイミングと空間位置をどの程度的確におさえられるかにあることが総括された。磁気圏サブスト-ムの研究は、電離圏と磁気圏プラズマシ-トを包括してグロ-バルに考察していくこと、観測ー計算機シミュレションー理論を一環とした研究体制で臨むことが出来るかどうかが今後の発展を決定するということであった。本研究課題の実施を通じて得られた磁気圏研究の動向に関する国際的認識は、現在既に進められている国際共同研究計画(ISTP、GEM、STEP)に活用され、この方面の研究の急速な進展に寄与し得るものと確信している。
