Research Abstract |
Recently, various methods have been proposed to evaluate the degree of mechanical soundness of materials. However, solid masses and/or in homogeneities give rise to difficult problems in quantitative evaluation of structural materials in civil engineering. In pursuing this project, the research members from the fields of mechanics of materials, steel-structural engineering, concrete engineering, soil engineering and rock mechanics cooperated with the members of Committee of Non-Destructive Evaluation in Japan Society of Civil, Engineering. Main results of this project are as follows : In the first place, we published a state-of-the arts report entitled "Approaches to Quantitative Non-Destructive Evaluation o Structures and Materials in Civil Engineering", in which non-destructive testings adopted in civil engineering are outlined and the theoretical background of evaluation methods and the perspective of future non-destructive evaluation are reviewed. In the next, as the results of discussions in research meetings, including "Symposium on NonDestructive Evaluation in Civil Engineering" which was organized by the above mentioned committee, we recognized the importance of diverse aspects presented by the members of this project. Among these are 1) the back analyses for the quantitative non-destructive evaluation, 2) the wave-propagation analyses for the quantitative non-destructive evaluation, 3) considerations on the mechanical background and 4) various types of examples. Lastly, we made inquiries about the non-destructive evaluation in the fields of ground engineering, rock engineering, concrete engineering and steel-structural engineering. From these inquiries, we investigated the status quo and extracted the future problems of quantitative non-destructive evaluation in civil engineering.
