Research Abstract |
Because of less, stress, surface electromyography (EMG) is very useful examination method for masticatory function, especially in children. To generalize the EMG examination in children, this research group will publish a book entitled "Electromyographic Examination of Masticatory Muscles in Children" in March, 1992. A part of research results obtained in individual investigation were as follows : A. The alteration of the activity of the masticatory muscles on the working and balancin sides during dentitional development 1) There were significant differences (p 0.01) in EMG activities among muscles. 2) Compared to children, the ratio of the masseter muscle activity on the working side to total muscle activity in adults showed a significant increase, whereas decrease in the anterior temporalis muscle activity on the balancing side (p 0.01). B. Muscle activity in class III malocclusion 1) In the group of improvement in the inverse oberiet, the anterior temporalis muscle activity was largest in centric occlusion, whereas the posterior temporalis muscle activity was largest in maximum open mouth and posterior movement of mandible. 2) Muscle activity in improvement group was larger than that in class III malocclusion group. 3) In improvement group, muscle activity in centric occlusion was almost same as in normal occlusion group. C. The influence of afferent sense from the teeth surrounding structures and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) on silent period (SP) of masticatory muscle. 1) The prevalence of SP during tooth tapping and chin tap showed significant differences in the relations between nomal condition and local anesthesia of mandibular and maxilla teeth and local anesthesia of TMJ and all teeth. D. Relationship between masticatory muscle activity and mandibular movement A new system for investigation on relationship between masticatory muscle activity and mandibular movement has developed.
