Research Abstract

This study was aimed to see how the structures, dynamical behaviours and several electronic properties in molten materials varied incorporating with their bonding natures.
In particular, molten thallium-chalcogen system is a very good example to study the above facts, because its system exhibit continuously from the metallic bonding to ionic and finally to covalent bonding with the change of composition. In the structural investigation, the molten structures of Tl to Tl_2Se are nearly the same, which indicates that the Se atoms may be replaced with Tl atoms although the mixtures maintain a kind of local order. However, the electronic conductivity changes drastically on going from metallic to ionic compound Tl_2Se. In connection with this change the mobility of ion increases drastically.
These cross correlation may suggest that the cross conductivities in this system are varied largely in the region of metal-non metal transition.
From Tl_2Se to molten Se, the structural investigation suggests a kind of mixed solution of local clusters composed of Se chains and ionic part of Tl_2Se.
This implies that an amalgamation between the ionic compound and the covalent bonding material was not maintained.
The structural studies and measurements of the magnetic susceptibilities for cuprous halides in their molten states were also carried out.
These materials involved partly a covalent character and this character tends to from a tetrahedral configuration in the molten state.
