Research Abstract |
The results are summarized as follows. 1. A mathematical model which represents microscopic flow and deformation features of solid and liquid components included in those metals were formulated. This model can be used effectively for predicting flow stresses of mashy /semi- solid metals especially when they have high solid fraction. 2. A new method for detecting the solid fraction of mashy/semi- solid metal was developed. The method was applied to various metals and relationships between solid fraction and temperature for many kind of metals were obtained. It has become evident that the developed method is very effective and convenient for detecting the solid fraction of metals being subjected to mashy/semi-solid processing. 3. A new-process for manufacturing semi-solid metals was developed. It was named as SCR (Shear-Cooling Roll)-process. A proto-type machine was built and the characterization of the process was performed. Through a series of tests carried out by employing molten aluminum alloys and ferrous alloys as raw materials, SCR-process has been demonstrated to be very effective for making molten metals into semi-solid metals with various levels of soled fraction. 4. Mechanical properties and formability of semi-solid metals manufactured by SCR process have been widely investigated. 5. Mashy-state forging of cast irons was performed and internal structures of products were investigated. As the result, this technology was found effective for manufacturing high quality cast iron products. 6. Manufacturing processes for various car parts and electric appliance parts have been investigated by using mashy/semi- solid metal forming technology.
