Research Abstract	低次元多様体の幾何の研究には,様々な数学の側面が現われる.本研究では,分担者の多岐にわたる専門領域と整備されたコンピュ-タ環境を依り所に,他機関の研究者もふくめ相互研究交流を日常的にとりながら,低次元多様体論の研究を進めることを指針とした. 具体的には,低次元多様体の理論的考察を視覚的に支援するための実験数学活動として,2次元図形上の測地流の軌道および複素力学系に現われるフラクタルをシミュレ-トするインタ-ラクティブなコンピュ-タプログラムを作成した.これらはエルゴ-ド的あるいはカオティクな解析現象を視覚的に実験する道具となる.また双曲多面体をコンピュ-タにより画像表示することを試みた.さらにオ-トマトンの概念を用いた双曲平面図形生成メカニズムをコンピュ-タにのせ,その応用として拡張されたアポロニアンパッキングの作図を極めて一般的に行なった. 一方コンピュ-タ上の仕事と直接結び付きはないがその支援の基に,曲面を含む最小3次元双曲多様体の発見,多角形の型の空間の幾何構造の記述,境界付き双曲多様体の多面体分割の構成,等の低次元多様体論の新しい純粋に理論的な結果を得た.これらは論文としてまとめ,学会・研究集会で発表した. 研究の性格上多くの研究者との交流が不可欠であり,研究費は約75%を旅費,約25%を謝金にあて,研究連絡などにより交流促進を計った.本年度は夏に世界数学者会議が京都で開催され,国際研究交流の機会も多く,経費は極めて有効に利用することができた.
