白亜系ソテツ植物の系統解剖学的研究

Research Abstract

被子植物の起源解明への布石として、被子植物の原始群と似た解剖学的形質をもったソテツ植物化石の栄養器官及び生殖器官及び生殖器官の研究を行った。
1.西田治文は邦産最初の大型種キカデオイデア及び小型種キカデオイデラの花の化石を入手し、その組織学的研究を行い、従来知られていなかった系統的に重要な新知見を得た。(1)キカデオイデア、キカデオイデラ共に胚珠を種間鱗片には1細胞層の厚さの被膜があることをたしかめた。この被覆は従来、胚珠の基部では認識されていたが上部では珠皮につながり、両者の関係は常にあいまいにされていた。これを今回はっきりした被覆が胚珠全体をおおっていることをたしかめた。(2)キカデオイデラにおいては、珠皮に維管束のあることをたしかめた。ベネツチテス類の珠皮に維管束の存在は今まで知られていなかった。(3)雄しべの集合子嚢群の壁にも維管束のあることをたしかめた。これも従来ベネツチテス類では知られていなかった。(4)胚珠の被覆と、2弁状の集合知見をもとにソテツ植物の種子の進化過程を提唱した。(西田治文1991)
2.いっぽう西田誠は(1)キカデオイデアの樹幹化石の組織学的研究を行い、邦産4種を整理し同時に本邦白亜系(群馬無山中地溝帯)からはじめてソテツ類に近縁の新属Sanchucycasを発表。(西田・西田・田中1991)さらに北海道の上部白亜系からもソテツ型樹幹を発見、目下研究中である。(2)さらにソテツ型葉柄化石を発見、目下研究中であるが、これは新属と思われる。
