Research Abstract

There are only a few studies investigating the effect of ultrasound on hearing. Authors investigated experimentally the effect of ultrasound with moderate sound level for long time exposure to the inner ear using electrophysiological methods established already. Checking the coclear microphonics (CM), the action potential (AP) and the endocochlear potential (EP), the following results were obtained. Several kind (10 kHz, 16 kHz, 22 kHz, 28 kHz) of lbng exposure of moderate sound level of low frequency ultrasound below 100 dB SPL induced remarkable changes in CM, AP(elevation of threshold and decrease of maximum output voltage), and especially in EP (decrease of the absolute value of negative potential in previous report (Ishida, et al.)). In this report using 108 albino guinea pigs, authors investigated the effect of ultrasound of 19 kHz and 25 kHz with moderate sound level of long exposure on the function of the cochlea.
As an explanation of effect of low frequency ultrasound on the in … More ner ear function, especially changes of EP, the stimulus of ultrasound to autonomic nervous system of the cochlea was considered.
Many complaints were induced by low frequency ultrasound in industrial workers. Non auditory effects induced by ultrasound, namely, tinnitus, headaches, fatigue etc., was reported in many cases of exposure. However, there are only a few studies investigating the effect of ultrasound. By examining 218 albino guinea pigs, authors investigated experimentally the effect of ultrasound with moderate sound level for long time exposure to inner ear using blectrophysiological method. Checking the cochlear microphonics (CM), the action potential (AP) and the endocochlbar potential (EP), the following results were obtained.
