| Research Abstract |
We conjecture that newborn islets have the much activity of multiplication in comparison with adult islets.
In this study, newborn golden-hamster islets have or don't have the activity of multiplication and the possibility of transplantation were examined.
1. After one week incubation, newborn islets were almost same shape of adult islets morphologically and histologically.
2. Insulin release by glucose stimulation, insulin content, and DNA content of the newborn cultured islets increased the level of adult islets each after five weeks incubation.
3. DNA replication activity of newborn islets used by bromodeoxyuridine was about tenfold.
4. Three newborn pancreases were able to normalize glucose levels in diabetic mice after transplantation beneath the renal capsule six weeks later.
5. Histological study of the transplanted pancreases beneath the renal capsule of mice recognized the B cells and A cells by staining insulin and glucagon.
