In the present work, an in situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance technique (in situ EQCM technique) was developed for elucidating charge transport in electroactive thin films. This technique is based on the quartz crystal microbalance used in conjunction with electrochemistry, and can be expected as a highly useful tool capable of quantitatively measuring small mass changes (10^<-9>- 10^<-6>g cm^<-2>) of electrode surfaces which occur as a result of electrochemical process. The in situ EQCM technique was successfully applied for quantitatively clarifying the charge-transport processes of some thin films which are electroactive and well-swollen with solvent/electrolyte : (i) Polymer complex films (poly(vinylferrocene) , osmium polymer : [Os (bpy)_2 (PVP)Cl) Cl (bpy : 2, 2'-bipyridine, PVP : poly (4-vinylpyridine) ) (ii) Hydrogen-absorbing metal films (H_2/Pd film, D_2/Pb film) (iii) Electropolymerized films (polyaniline, polypyrrole. poly (pyrrolo-pyrrole) S) A fruitful information about these charge-transport processes was obtained, especially demonstrating that noble technique make it possible to directly elucidate the role of electroinactive species (e. g., solvent and counter ions) in charge-transport processes.
