Research Abstract |
The physiological role of gap junctions in cardiac muscle, smooth muscles and neurons is to provide pathways for the propagation of action potentials. However, physiological roles of gap junctions in other tissues are still unclear. In this project, we investigated the various functions of gap junctional intercellular communication and the variation of the molecular structure of gap junctions in order to find the relationships between the functions and the structure. At least 12 different connexins, the gap-junction proteins, have now been identified. The function of the gap junction generally poteins, have now been identified. The function of the gap junction generally depends on the connexins that the gap junction consists of. We got many advances in the studies on the distribution of each connexin in gap junctions which contain at least two kinds of connexins, the process of incorporation of connexins into plasma membrane and the process of absorption of connexin of dead cells by neighbering cells. We also got many advances in studies on the role of the gap junction in differentiation, morphogenesis, carcinogenesis and secretion in salivary glands and pancreas. The meeting was held in the National Institute for Physiological Sciences, in Okazaki, in every Februaly from 1992 to 1994. Another meeting was held in Hiroshima as the Symposium on Morphology and Function of Gap Junctional Intercellular Communication in August, 1992. The other meeting, 1993 International Meeting on Gap Junctions, was also held in foreign researchers participated in the international meeting.
