Research Abstract

Dust control is a big issue in mining. Dust generation in cutting or drilling of rock is related to the internal structure and fragmentation properties of the rock. From this point of view, lithological experiment and rock impact test using a Protodyakonov type drop hammer were carried out to examine the fragmentation mechanism and the consumed energy during impact testing, to compare the impact hardness index with the fundamental mechanical properties obtained in laboratory testing and to discuss the prediction of cuttability and drillability using the rock impact hardness number or RIHN.
In this study, the results were obtained as follows:
1.The RIHN is a consistent and reproducible index of rock property.
2.The RIHN can be obtained precisely using a single core specimen.
3.The specific energy or energy per unit new surface area is virtually constant expressing an inherent rock fragmentation property.
4.There is a fairly good linear relation between the RIHN and the specific energy. Therefore, the RIHN can be used directly in the prediction of cutting or drilling machine performance.
5.The RIHN can also be used to estimate the extent of the potential dust generation in working place.
