Research Abstract |
i) Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) plus bone grafts (to recruit donor-derived stromal cells) can prevent graft failure and autoimmune diseases in MRL/lpr mice. ii) BMT can be used to treat not only a certain type of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus but also its complications such as hyperlipidemia and diabetic nephropathy. iii) Focal segmental glomerular sclerosis (FGS) is a stem cell disorders, and BMT can be used to treat FGS. iv) Bone marrow stromal cells produce a new factor that attracts hemopoietic stem cells. v) Hemopoietic stem cells trapped in the liver play a crucial role in the induction and maintainance of portal vein tolerance. vi) We have established a new method for purifying pluripotent hemopoietic stem cells.
