Research Abstract

We studied ocular problems relevant to human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-I).from cliical and basic viewpoints and the following results were obtained. Distinct ocular disorers were found to occur with etiological association to HTLV-I as a part of systemic diseases or as an isolated ocular disease. Two ocular disorders are noticeable, that is HTLV-I associated uveitis (HAU0and HTLV-I associated retinochoroidal degeneration.
1. HTLV-I associated uveitis (HAU). Uveal inflammatory signs and symptoms are developed in patients with HTLV-I associated myelopathy or in HTLV-I carriers., with clinical features consisting of acute granulomatous inflamations in the anterior or posterior segments which resolve in response to corticosteroids. Visual outcome is usually favorable, but recurrent disease is frequent.
2. HTLV-I associated retinochoroidal degeneration (HARD). This pathology is found in occasional patients with HTLV-I associated myelopathy, with features similar to hereditary degeneration.
3. Intraocular synthesis of antibodies to HTLV-I.Aqueous humors from patients with HAU showed evidence of intraocular production of antibodies to HTLV-I while few cases showed proviral DNA of HTLV-I in the aqueous humor, suggesting that HAU represents immune response results rather than ocular infection of the retrovirus.
4. Immunogenetic background of HAU was suggested from HLA studies in patients.
