Research Abstract

1. We built a prototype instrument providing absolute values of cerebral blood volume and its oxygenation noninvasively using near infrared spectroscopy with multi-point method. Light emissing diodes of 3 wavelengths (705, 810, and 880nm) were used and equisions obtained from hypoxic experiments of rat brain were adapted for the measurement of oxygen saturation.
2. When cerebral blood saturation was measured in an infant with tetoragy of Fallot, the value was higher than that of arterial blood, thus indicating that tissue backgroud is different between human and rat brain. Then we recalculated and obtained new equisions from data in dead human infants.
3. We measured brain hemoglobin concentration in 10 normal full-term infants. The mean value was 42.5 %absorption, which is equivalent to 3.69ml/100g. This seems to be a very reasonable value of cerebral blood volume in full-term infants.
