| Research Abstract |
This report is composed of both experimental and survey studies on our time experience. In experimental study, the relation between reaction time(RT) and estimated time(ET) was examined to explore the mechanism of time estimation. RT was measured as the response to a spot light presented after various length of foreperiod. ET was measured by the method of reproduction as the standard of the foreperiod used in measuring RT. These experiments were conducted under both experimental situations. In the predictable condition, subjects are told the length of foreperiod in advance by experimenter. In the unpredictable condition, subjects were not given such a cue. The main results were as follows: (1)In experiment I , the results in the predictable condition had many more significant correlations than those in the unpredictable condition. (2)In experiment II , the tendencies as shown in previous experiment were reexamied in varying condition of foreperiod in which subjects spent in counting reversely a two- or four-figure number told by experimenter. But the results obtained in this condition had little difference in previous experiment. In survey study, 547 college students were asked to answer a questionnaire relating to their time experience. Four factors were derived as a result of factor analysis. These were named time anxiety, future perspective, time utilization, and time imagery, respectively. Mean factor score was used to investigate the difference of time experience among personality types in YG Personality Inventory. Factor scores relating to time anxiety and time perspective in E and B type groups who were unstable and maladjusted personality showed different from those in D and C types. These results indicate that the more people get unstable and irritable, the stronger they come to be anxious about the passage of time and their future perspective. Less
