Research Abstract

As a simple method for the evaluation of pressure-weldability between a given set of ceramics and metal, cutting test is proposed. In the test, the metal is cut on a lathe with the ceramics to be tested at their corner. During the cutting, newly born clean surface of metal is in direct contact with the tool face at high pressure and slides over the face. The temperature at the contact can be controlled by changing the cutting speed and other conditions. Namely, the conditions similar to the friction welding can be realized easily by this cutting.
For the evaluation of weldability, following three methods were examined ;
1. microscopic observation of traces of adhered metal on the ceramic tool face,
2. check of adhered chip left on the tool face after a short length of cutting,and
3. examination of machined surface roughness which is sensitively affected by the welding.
The results of the cutting test were compared with the weldability in the ultra-sonic welding, and fairly good coinsidence in the two methods were observed.
Temperature rise at the interface in ultrasonic welding was studied and found to be about 500K, which is in the range of cutting temperature in the usual cutting test.
