Research Abstract |
We discussed "indoor odor" as they are related to improved indoor air quality. We then constructed an odor measurement device for measuring odor intensities. Using this device, we conducted laboratory experiments and ran field surveys in office buildings to determine the air requirement for ventilation. Our conclusions are as follows. 1.Preparation of the device to judge indoor odor a. To obtain a constant for the odor intensity value, we prepared and calibrated, as a main, efficient measuring means, the device to judge indoor odor (olfacto-meter) rated ASTM E544-75. b. For air pollutant evaluation, we used the olfacto-meter to measure the butanol concentration. when we compared the odor sensation responses of a panel (visitor) and subjects (occupants) with the results obtained by measuring the butanol concentration with the olfacto-meter, we found that air pollutant was evaluated more exactly by the butanol concentration readings. 2.The air requirement for ventilation As a result of our la

boratory experiments and field surveys in classrooms and office buildings, we drew the following conclusions relative to the air requirement for ventilation. a. As the member of a panel are more sensitive to indoor odors, we should depend on the odor sensations of a panel when determining the air requirement for ventilation per person. b. Using a panel's sensation ranking, "3. smell" as a reference value, we calculated the air requirement for ventilation from the CO_2 concentration. In an area in which only with human body odor was diffused, we determined that the air requirement for ventilation was 6.0 to 7.5 m^3/h. The air requirement for ventilation we found during our office surveys was 13 to 17m^3/h. c. When we calculated the air requirement for ventilation from the airborne particle concentration and the same planel's sensation ranking, we determined that it was 0.15 to 0.20mg/m^3. d. A panel's butanol concentration ranking of "3" was a value close to the odor concentration evaluation standard. We found that an olfacto-meter efficiently eualuated indoor odors. Less
