Research Abstract

1. Data were obtained from 162 nurses in K-hospital. Three subscales : depression, satisfaction and exhaustion emerged for Pines Burnout Measure(PBM) from the data analysis. Also, the same 3 subscales : EE, PA and DP emerged for Maslach Burnout Inventory(MBI) as those obtained by Maslach et al., while the subscales on which 3 items had the highest factor loadings, were not same as the results obtained in their data. It was suggested by the investigation of correlation between the PBM subscales and the MBI subscales that both instruments are measuring some amount of the same phenomenon, but the relationship is moderate. It was considered that score on EE of MBI increase first if one falls into burnout, and an increase in score on DP will follow with the advance of phenomenon. 2. Nurses whose egograms showed that any of CP, FC and AC was high, or any of NP and A was low, had higher scores both PBM and MBI. Furthermore, those whose egograms showed that AC was located at the peak, or NP at the bottom, or levels of total energy were high, had higher scores. Screening nurses with high risk concerning to burnout was performed based on the results mentioned above. It was considered that the results obtained would be available for practical use. 3. nursing students showed a significant increase in scores on both PBM and MBI and a significant reduction in variance in R-R intervals on electrocardiogram (R-R : CV) during clinical exercise in hospital. Their burnout scores and R-R : CV got back to former levels when the exercise of about one year duration came to an end. Also, nurses who came off night shift showed a significant reduction in R-R : CV. The results obtained show that R-R : CV would be available as an indicator of stress.
