Research Abstract |
Purposes of this study were to evaluate discriminating ability of touch for fine surface textures and to estimate sensory information processing mechanisms for the ability In the most important experiment aluminum oxide abrasive papers were adopted as the stimuli. Their grit values were 400, 600, 1200, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 8000. Difference thresholds were measured with two-way forced choice technique, and were between 2.4 mum and 3.0 mum when they could be determined. It was reasoned, based on Weber's fractions of difference thresholds and on the limits of neural information processing ability in humans, that the subjects knew degrees of roughness only from amplitude information present in surface unevenness.
