Research Abstract

Population genetics theory of variable environments were studied laying emphasis on the weak mutation limit, which has closer correspondence with available data at DNA sites than the strong mutation limit hitherto studied.The stationary solution of a parity model is obtained whose basic parameters include fluctuation rate in addition to mutation rate, selection intensity, and population size of conventional theory. In this model it became clear how evolution rate and polymorphism depend on these parameters. It became possible to explain the reason why evolution rate is usually smaller than the mutation rate, and to discuss the correlation of the evolution rate to the functional constraint and polymorphism beyond the framework of the neutral theory. Two-site model was also studied, through which some new insights were obtained in the concerted evolution and hitchhike effect. Data analyzes were done laying emphasis on the substitution type dependence of the feature of evolution rate and polymorphism. They included amylase loci of Drosophila, HLA loci, loci of pathogenic viruses, and of wheat. However, no unanimous conclusion as to the cause of molecular evolution has yet been reached.
For the evolution of quantative traits mathematical models of variable environments were studied in which the phenotypic values are continuous real numbers. Some new conditions and feature of polymorphism was obtained in such models. The effect of variable environments were theoretically studied on the life history strategy of organisms and on polymorphism of phage population in the cellstat. The effect of parasites on the maintenance of sexual reproduction of hosts was studied in the fieldwork of Eupatorium against its viral infection.
