Research Abstract

The main aim of this research project is to generate and detect the invisible axions, elementary particles with extremely small mass, which was introduced to solve the strong CP problem but have not been detected until now. The abstract of the results divided into two parts. the theoretical work and experimental one, are shown below.
Part 1.Theoretical Research
(1)Background of the research on axions : The anomaly (quantum anomaly) and strong CP problem which are quite important as the basis of this research were examined in details.
(2)Peccei-Quinn symmetry : Peccei-Quinn symmetry by which axions were first introduced to the standard theory of elementary particles was reviewed from the view point of our research.
(3)Generation and detection of axions in optical resonators : Optical resonators were proved to be very eficient for enhancing the signals in the process where photons are converted to axions by the aid of magnetic field and signal photons are generated from the axions by the inv … More erse process.
(4)Prediction on the Kobe Experiment : The results expected in our experiment were examined, predicting that 100-days observation could give the upper limit of the coupling constant g as small as 10^<-7>.
Part 2.Experimental Research
(1)Introduction : Physics of the axion and the state of axion-detection experiments are summarized.
(2)Principle of the experiment : principls of the experiment with optical resonator is described.
(3)Experimental apparatus : The outline of the apparatus is described with emphasis on the high-quality optical resonators (with finesse of the order of 10,000). The technique for simultaneously locking the two optical resonators to the laser frequency is also described.
(4)Results and discussions : The performance of the apparatus and results of preliminary axion-detection experiment are briefly discussed.
