Research Abstract |
A mesoscopic particle system, i.e.asystem intermediate between atoms or molecules and solids, the stable C_<60> cluster has found wide attention, especially after the discovery of a relatively easy synthesis in macroscopic quantities. In order to verify experimentally whether electron scattering from gas phase differs from scattering by solid films we have performed low energy electron scattering from gas phase single molecules of C_<60>(most experiments are done on thin films). To this purpose, a high temperature crucible was introduced into a preexisting collision apparatus, and a defferential pumping system was installed. Relative elastic electron scattering spectra of C_<60> were recorded for impact energies from 1 to 11.5eV and scattering angles from 30^0 to 90^0. An estimate of their absolute DCS gave an order of 4 x 10^<-14>cm^2/sr, about 100 times that of He. The angular behavior is indicative of a spherical potential well with partial waves up to about l = 15 as to be expected for large molecules. Vibrational excitations were measured at 7eV for angles from 20^0 to 60^0. Two peaks were found inculding forbidden transitions, their angular distribution is flat. Electronic excitations at impact energies of 50 and 100eV confirm the known optically allowed transitions in the loss range from 1 to 55eV and resolve the 6 eV pi-electron plasmon peak into at least four steps. A small peak of 2eV width was found at 28eV, the position of the "sigma+pi" plasmon in solid films.
