Research Abstract

Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are considered one of the main flat-panel-display technology for the next generation. However, a narrow viewing-angle cone for many types of LCDs is one of the limiting factors in obtaining high-quality displays. For solving this problem, the following investigation has been made and the target has been achieved.
1. The narrow viewing cone is the result of the anisotropy of birefringence of liquid-crystal molecules. In this research, a novel double-layr electrically controlled birefringence-model LCD (DECB) was proposed and the optimum design condition for the optical compensation was clarified theoretically.
2. Based on the theoretical results, the electro-optical properties of the D-ECB cell was investigated experimentally. It was clarified that the D-ECB cell expanded the viewing-angle cone extremely.
3. The optical compensation of the D-ECB occurs only when certain voltages are applied. The film compensated D-ECB was investigated for the compensation in off state. As the results, it realized a wide cone of view in off state.
4. The optimum condition of the film compensated D-ECB was totally examined in order to realize the device with a wide viewing-angle cone.
It is confirmed that the film compensated electrically controlled birefringence liquid crystal display proposed in this research will make it possible to fabricate wide-viewing angle cone LCDs by stacking an optical compensation media.
