Research Abstract |
The effectiveness of RI cone penetrometers has been demonstrated by using it in different environments. And the data obtained through these penetration tests are effectively employed in the foundation engineering works. The main conclusions derived are as follows : 1. These newly developed cone penetrometers have been used effectively in various soil environments, such as the reclaimed land with high cloride content, normal clay deposit to site characterized by very high water content. 2. The presence of chloride ions in the soil can lead to the underestimation of the natural water content of the soil. Therefore care must be taken when the RI cone is employed in the marine environment or the marine deposits. 3. Soil improvement work can be continuously monitored through these cone penetrometers. This is done by checking the void ratio and the density profiles at the construction site. 4. The data obtained from these cone penetrometers can offer the useful information about the conditions of a clay foundation. We can use this set of information as input for finite-element analyzes. 5. Encouraged by the results obtained above, we believe that by deploying these cone penetrometers at various stages of construction process, practicing engineers can build-up a data base which can be used in calculating the settlement of a clay foundation.
