Research Abstract

The subject of underground utilizations whose representative is radioactive waste disposal sites has enhanced the importance of investigating water flow characteristics of fractured rock masses.
From this point of view, a new testing apparatus has been developed to enable shear-flow coupling testing. This apparatus is employed for investigating the shear-dilation-flow characteristics of joints extending over the residual regions after a peak stress.
(1) A Shear-flow coupling test apparatus which allows large shear displacement and high normal stress was developed, and a testing procedure for control and measurement was established.
(2) Using this apparatus, the effect of shear deformation on hydraulic conductivity of a joint has been investigated for artificial jointed hard granite specimens.
(3) Hydraulic conductivities increased with increases of shear displacement at all ranges of considered to be an increasing of fracture aperture due to the riding and the break of asperities.
(4) Shear-flow characteristics obtained from the test agree with certain predictions, which take account of the theoretical and physical apertures, fractured surfaces.
