Research Abstract

The purpose of this research was to develop a system for monitoring arterial pressure waveforms continuously and non-invasively during exercise. The system was composed of a newly developped detector and a computerized blood pressure monitoring apparatus named Finapres. The detector which was composed of an infrared light-emitting diode (LED) , a photo diode, and an air cuff was connected to a servo controller of the signal-process-and display unit of Finapres. By attaching the detector to a subject's ear, it became possible to monitor the changes in arterial pressure waveforms continuously and non-invasively while subjects were in motion.
The research had been conducted for three years and it consisted of three stages ;
(1) development of ear detector
(2) collection and analysis of the data for improvement of the system
(3) application of the system to the studies in sports medicine, labor science, and human engineerings
As the results,
(1) A light-weighted ear detector was developped
(2) The system was statistically proved to be accurate and reliable through the experiments
(3) The system was found to be applicable to the measurements of arterial pressure waveforms (blood pressures and heart rate) of the subjects during work in various types of studies in sports medicine, labor science, and humanengineerings.
