Research Abstract |
It is well known that shihua *, a form of literary essay on poems, has flourished in China for nearly one thousand years from the Nothern Song until the end of Qing, and in Japan also have been produced great many pieces of shihua during the period of Edo. This research aims to grasp systematically these pieces of shihua both in China and in Japan. I proved, in an essay entitled "From the Shipin to Shihua" written as one of the results of this project, that the origin of shihua dates back, in fact, to the Six Dynasties and the Tang, when the name of shihua itself has not yet existed. Some caracteristics of shihua, such as miscellneous forms containing criticisms of poems and anecdotes about poetry and poets, have been already found in the Shipin *, Classification of Poets, a masterpiece of literary criticism written at the beginning of the 6th century. Such form has been succeeded in the criticisisms compound in several anthologies of Tang poetry selected by contemporaries, and gave great influences on the formation of shihua in the coming Song Dynasty.
